July 13, 2009 – The ICPAT short term training program for IGAD member states opened in Addis Ababa today.

 The 10-day course on Counter Terrorism Measures and Border Control Management is the first IGAD-wide training course to be launched by ICPAT. Previously, the CT courses were longer and were provided country by country for a larger group of trainees.Participants include officials from law enforcement and security agencies as well as immigration and customs authorities.The areas to be covered in the course include the following:
  • Nature of terrorism in the IGAD region
  • Border control management
  • Development of national border management strategies
  • Development of border intelligence units
  • Migration management
  • Forgery detection and imposter recognition
  • Cross-border organized crimes
  • Mutual legal assistance, administrative assistance and extradition law
  • Pre incident – incident – and post incident counter terrorism measures

It is expected that ICPAT will run short-term courses in these and other subjects in the course of 2009 and the first part of 2010.
