UN Counter-terrorism director visits ICPAT
May 11, 2009 - The Director of the United Nations Counter Terrorism Executive Directorate (UNCTED), Mr. Mike Smith and a colleague from his office, Mr. Seif El-Dawla paid a visit to the ICPAT Office and held discussions with a team from ICPAT. The discussions at ICPAT focused mainly on challenges and lessons learnt in the three years of ICPAT's existence and also on the ways through which regional organizations dealing with terrorism can exchange experiences and best practices. One issue discussed, among others related to how to bring the IGAD member states and international partners together to build CT capacity in the IGAD region. Another concern taken up covered the manner in which respect for humen rights would be integrated in training and other programs designed to resist terrorism. The Director is visiting Ethiopia and meeting with officials of the Ethiopian Government and the African Union before proceeding to Uganda to open the joint UNCTED-ICPAT Regional Border Security Meeting scheduled to be held in Kampala on May 13 and 14, 2009.(ICPAT Information)
